Movie Review: Forbidden Kingdom

Jackie Chan and Jet Li in one movie, what can you ask for? This is the first time that the two biggest Asian action stars since Bruce Lee join forces to fight against evil in a very explosive movie, and that’s the reason why I was so excited to watch the movie the moment it opens at the cinema.

The movie started out with a young lad named Jason (portrayed by Michael Angarano) visiting a Chinatown pawnshop. The pawnshop is own a by an old man known as Old Hap (played well by Jackie Chan). While in the pawnshop, Jason saw a legendary stick weapon of the Chinese sage and warrior, known as the Monkey King (played by Jet Li).

On his way home, he was mobbed by a number of gang members and eventually force him to lead them to the pawnshop to steal the old man’s earning and valuable belongings. The old man try to defend himself but was shot by the leader of the gang. The action began when the lost relic got into Jason’s hand to protect himself from the gang members. He then found himself going back to the ancient China and there he met his friends who will become his company in unleashing the imprisoned Monkey King.

The Monkey King was tricked by the ruthless jade warlord played by Collin Chou and eventually became a statue. For him to be back to human, his statue must be smashed with his staff that is being taking care of by four brave warriors; Lu yan, Silent Monk, Golden Sparrow, and Jason. All three of them must face numerous battles before reaching the Forbidden Kingdom.

The message of the movie is simple. In the end the good will always win. It also about courage, honor, friendship, loyalty, and believing in yourself.

Though some may say that the movie is similar to Kung Fu packed movies that were released before, the lead stars were able to present an amazing action sequences. I have to say that Jackie Chan and Jet Li remains a legend in Asian Martial Arts.

The movie is 1 hour and 45 minutes long with a rating of GP (General Patronage). It was entirely shot in China. Directed by Rob Minkoff, the same director who directed Lion King and The Haunted Mansion.

If you have not seen the movie, you should go and watch it to the nearest cinema. A perfect combination of martial arts and a few good laughs. Two thumbs up for Forbidden Kingdom.
